Abstract
This study aims to determine whether the standardized formulation of the probability of ruin can serve as a validation tool for the Z-score model in the banking sector of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Using a sample of commercial banks operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo over an eleven-year period (2014–2024), the study relies on data extracted from the banks’ accounting and financial statements. The findings indicate that it is not appropriate to generalize the application of Altman’s Z-score model to commercial banks operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Indeed, the model yields results that are inconsistent with those originally obtained for publicly listed industrial and commercial firms, owing to the specific characteristics of the banking sector. The study therefore recommends incorporating bank-specific variables into the original or revised Altman model to improve its predictive performance in assessing the risk of bank failure.
